PledgePage for 'Hurricane Katrina' Relief and 'Fabric of Life' clothes drive
[Update (09/28/05): Thanks to the generous contributions we successfully achieved both our
fundraising goals! Raising a total of $2600.]
Our mission is two-fold: First to collectively raise a $1000 for relief efforts
for hurricane Katrina (the proceeds will go to Direct Relief) (the 'L.A walk for
hope' and bay area 'bubba gump' walk/run will focus on this) and second to raise funds
to ship 20 boxes of clothes to the needy in India (the N.J Liberty Park walk/run
will focus on this)
Hurricane Katrina Relief
Larry King asked pointedly, "Why didn't they leave", refering to the thousands
of residents who stayed back despite a warning that a category 5 hurricane
was going to strike the coast of Louisiana.
A startling observation was made- many lived from paycheck to paycheck
and the hurricane struck on the 29th, the end of the month and paychecks were
due on the 1st. Some stayed back because they didn't know what to do with their pets.
Some stayed back because they didn't know how long it would take to
get back to their homes. Those who had the ability to leave had already left,
those who couldn't stayed back.
It wasn't the category 4 Hurricane striking the coast of Louisiana that
shook us as much as the after effects. Being mostly below sea-level and its
levees breached, water filled 70% of new orleans quickly.
Those that chose to stay back didn't recieve relief for days. It's clear from
the extent of the damage that it would take months if not years to rebuild.
It is with the intent of helping this relief/rebuilding effort we are running/walking to
raise a modest $1000. The proceeds will go to Katrina Relief efforts
conducted by Direct Relief.
Direct Relief is a 501(c)(3) certified non-profit and has one of the highest
operational efficiencies (i.e close to 100% of the amount donated will directly go
the cause) and specializes in providing assistance after distasters have struck.
Fabric of Life clothing drive
Our initial intent was to do a series of walkathons/marathons just for shipping
the clothes collected for the needy in India.
Hurricane Katrina changed that. The walk/run teams in L.A and the bay area
will be raising funds to give to hurricane Katrina. The NJ team will be raising funds
to help ship the 20 boxes of clothes to India. A recent blog entry captures the drive in
